Japan Nanbu Satetsu Tetsubin – Koizumi Nizaemon XI, Hirakumo Gata (平蜘蛛形)
With Original Presentation Box | Cast in Satetsu (Refined Sand Iron) by Imperial Kettle Maker – Okamaya Koizumi Nizaemon
Bold, distinctive, and steeped in tradition, the Hirakumo Gata tetsubin from the Koizumi Nizaemon XI lineage is a rare expression of both rustic strength and refined artistry. Cast in premium Japanese sand iron (satetsu), this kettle represents the highest echelon of traditional water kettles used in serious tea practice.
The name Hirakumo (平蜘蛛) translates literally to "flat spider," referencing its low, wide profile and outstretched silhouette—reminiscent of a spider spreading its legs. But far from delicate, this tetsubin boasts a muscular, grounded form. The top and bottom sections are joined with a rugged, irregular skirted seam, a deliberate aesthetic choice unique to this piece. The effect is raw yet sophisticated—an interplay of imperfection and harmony, echoing the wabi-sabi spirit of Japanese art.
The surface is finished with Koizumi family’s signature “rock texture” (岩肌理)—a special casting style that gives the kettle a stone-like appearance. Understated and ancient in feel, the texture lends an earthy, organic presence. Each touch reveals a quiet strength; each glance, a glimpse of timeless elegance.
Crafted in Nanbu, the historic ironware capital of Japan, this kettle exemplifies the legacy of over 350 years of masterful ironwork. The use of satetsu—the same high-grade iron ore used in traditional Japanese swords—results in a finer mineral yield and smoother mouthfeel when boiling water. It is favoured by seasoned tea drinkers for its ability to enhance the texture and sweetness of water, especially when preparing aged PuErh, roasted teas, or high-fire oolongs.
Presented in its original signed kiri-bako (paulownia wood box), this piece is not only a practical tool but also a highly collectible artefact—each kettle a testament to generations of artistry.
