A WORK FROM A COMPLETED LEGACY

Li Ying 李英 was a National Senior Technician, Fujian Provincial Ceramic Art Master and Nanping Arts and Crafts Master.

Her Oil Drop Tea Bowl entered the collection of the National Museum of China.

Li Ying has since passed away.

There will be no new works made by her hand.

What remains are the Jian Zhan she created during her lifetime.

For collectors, this makes even a small work an opportunity to own part of a completed body of work.

What immediately distinguishes this piece is the glaze.

Li Ying used a distinctive gold glaze with an unusually bright, clean and refined appearance.

Under softer light, the colour is warm and restrained.

Move it toward stronger light and the surface becomes noticeably more luminous.

Gold can easily become excessive.

This does not.

Bright, but not loud.
Luxurious, but still composed.

The attraction is not simply that it is gold.

It is the quality of the gold.

MADE FOR OFFERING

At approximately 76 mm in diameter × 54 mm in height, LY041 is a particularly compact Jian Zhan.

Its size makes it especially suitable as a Buddhist offering bowl, including for tea or water offerings.

Placed before a Buddha image, it occupies little space while the gold glaze catches the surrounding light beautifully.

Small in scale.
Luminous in presence.

It can be used as an offering vessel, or simply kept as a small collectible work by Li Ying.
