A MAJOR NAME IN MODERN JIAN ZHAN
For a collector, the importance of this bowl begins with the maker.
Sun Jianxing 孙建兴 is a Chinese Arts and Crafts Master and the sole National Representative Inheritor of the Jian Kiln Jianzhan Firing Technique, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage project of China.
Beginning in 1979, he participated in the research and revival of Jian Zhan firing and became one of the defining figures in the modern return of this historic ceramic tradition.
His works have entered major national museum collections in China.
With SJX038, however, authorship is only the beginning.
Because Leaf ware introduces something another glaze cannot:
the identity of the leaf itself.
LEAF|木叶
A Leaf Jian Zhan is not simply a bowl decorated with a leaf.
The leaf becomes part of the work.
Its shape.
Its veins.
Its position.
The way it survives the firing.
And the way it sits against the surrounding glaze.
All of these determine the final composition.
No two leaves are identical.
And once the leaf meets glaze and fire, no two results can be exactly repeated.
That gives Leaf ware an unusually strong sense of individuality.
NOT A PATTERN. A PARTICULAR WORK.
With Oil Drop or Hare’s Fur, collectors can compare different examples of the same glaze language.
Leaf ware is different.
You are not simply choosing:
“A Sun Jianxing Leaf bowl.”
You are choosing:
this leaf,
in this position,
on this bowl,
after this firing.
That distinction matters.
Because the closer a Jian Zhan moves from “glaze type” toward “individual composition”, the more it begins to feel like a specific work rather than a category.
SJX038 belongs firmly in that territory.
WHY IT MATTERS IN A COLLECTION
Among the different Jian Zhan expressions, Leaf ware carries one of the clearest visual identities.
It is immediately recognisable.
Yet every successful piece remains distinctly its own.
When that individuality is combined with the authorship of Sun Jianxing, the result is especially compelling for a collector.
This is not simply about owning another glaze.
It is about adding a work with:
a major maker,
a clear individual identity,
and a composition that cannot simply be reproduced later.
At approximately 9 cm in diameter, SJX038 is compact in scale.
But as a collectible object, it has presence far beyond its size.
