THE SIGNATURE GLAZE OF HUANG MEIJIN
For serious Jian Zhan collectors, Huang Meijin 黄美金 is a name that is difficult to bypass.
And to collect Huang Meijin is to encounter the work that defines him:
Golden Oil Drop.
Huang Meijin is a Fujian Provincial Representative Inheritor of the Jian Kiln Jianzhan Firing Technique.
After years of research, experimentation and repeated firing, Golden Oil Drop became the unmistakable signature of his work.
His Golden Oil Drop Jian Zhan has entered the collection of the British Museum.
For the collector, the relationship is clear:
To collect Jian Zhan is to know Huang Meijin.
To collect Huang Meijin is to know Golden Oil Drop.
GOLDEN OIL DROP|
Against the deep black glaze, gold-toned crystalline markings emerge through firing.
In softer light, the bowl remains dark and restrained.
Under stronger light, the gold begins to rise from the surface.
Black becomes bronze.
Bronze becomes gold.
The crystalline markings overlap and gather across the glaze, creating the depth and metallic brilliance that made Huang Meijin’s Golden Oil Drop so recognisable.
This is not simply a gold-coloured Jian Zhan.
It is the glaze language most closely associated with Huang Meijin himself.
THE BODY IS PART OF THE SIGNATURE
Huang Meijin’s works carry another identifying feature:
his distinctive fine-clay body.
Unlike the visibly coarser exposed body commonly associated with traditional Jian ware, Huang Meijin’s body is notably finer, denser and smoother to the touch.
For experienced collectors, this matters.
The glaze may be the first thing you notice.
But turn the bowl over and the body becomes another part of the maker’s identity.
The glaze identifies the style.
The body reinforces the maker.
INCENSE-BURNER FORM|
HMJ040 is where the form becomes equally important.
At approximately 10 cm in diameter and 5.7 cm in height, the bowl has an unusually low, compressed profile.
Imagine the familiar Shukou — 束口 — Jian Zhan form, then gently press the entire silhouette downward.
The mouth still gathers inward.
The body remains rounded.
But the centre of gravity becomes lower and broader.
The result is a bowl that feels more grounded, more sculptural and more substantial than a conventional tea-bowl profile.
That is the character of this Incense-Burner form|
A DIFFERENT WAY TO SEE GOLDEN OIL DROP
The lower profile changes how the glaze is experienced.
Viewed from the side, the eye first reads the silhouette:
low, rounded, contained.
Viewed from above, the balance shifts immediately to the Golden Oil Drop.
The wider visual field allows the crystalline markings to spread across the interior with greater presence.
So HMJ040 gives the collector two experiences in one object:
the form from the side,
the glaze from above.
That is what separates it from simply adding another Golden Oil Drop bowl.
WHY THIS FORM MATTERS
Collectors do not need ten works that all say the same thing.
Once the maker and signature glaze are already established, form becomes the next level of distinction.
HMJ040 combines:
Huang Meijin
Golden Oil Drop
his distinctive fine-clay body
and a low, highly recognisable Incense-Burner form
The result feels less like a conventional tea bowl and more like a small ceramic object with real sculptural presence.
At only 10 cm across, it is not large.
But visually, it feels substantial.
That is precisely why this form works so well with Golden Oil Drop:
the glaze gives it brilliance;
the form gives it weight.

收藏建盏,绕不开黄美金;
