Oil Drop is one of the most recognisable expressions of Jian Zhan.

That also makes it one of the easiest to misunderstand.

Almost any collector can recognise the pattern.

Far fewer pieces deserve to be judged only by the pattern.

At this level, the more important question is:

Who made it?

Sun Jianxing 孙建兴 is a Chinese Arts and Crafts Master and the sole National Representative Inheritor of the Jian Kiln Jianzhan Firing Technique, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage project of China.

Beginning in 1979, he participated in the research and revival of Jian Zhan firing and became one of the defining figures in the modern return of this historic ceramic tradition.

His works have entered major national museum collections in China.

For collectors, this changes the meaning of SJX037.

It is not simply an Oil Drop Jian Zhan.

It is Sun Jianxing’s Oil Drop.

But it carries it through one of the most important makers in the modern history of the craft.

An Oil Drop bowl should never be judged from one photograph.

Viewed directly, the glaze may appear dark and composed.

孙建兴，中国工艺美术大师，国家级非遗“建窑建盏烧制技艺”唯一的国家级代表性传承人。
