A MAJOR NAME IN MODERN JIAN ZHAN
For a collector, the first thing to notice about this bowl is not the colour.
It is the name.
Sun Jianxing 孙建兴 is a Chinese Arts and Crafts Master and the sole National Representative Inheritor of the Jian Kiln Jianzhan Firing Technique, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage project of China.
Beginning in 1979, he participated in the research and revival of Jian Zhan firing after the historic tradition had been interrupted for centuries.
Over decades of work, Sun Jianxing became one of the defining figures in the modern revival of Jian ware. His works have entered major national museum collections in China.
For collectors of contemporary Jian Zhan, this places the maker before the pattern.
WUJIN BLUE|
Wujin is one of the most restrained expressions of Jian ware.
In this piece, however, the deep black glaze carries a distinct blue presence.
The blue does not sit on the surface like decoration.
It emerges from within the darkness of the glaze, changing with light and viewing angle.
At first glance, the bowl appears quiet.
Look longer, and the black begins to open into blue.
That tension between depth, darkness and colour is what gives Wujin Blue its character.
There are no large, dramatic markings to dominate the surface.
The quality of the work therefore depends on something more fundamental:
the glaze, the firing, the form and the overall presence of the bowl.
WHY COLLECT SUN JIANXING
There are many Jian Zhan makers.
There are far fewer names that helped define the modern history of Jian Zhan itself.
That distinction matters.
A collector does not need to begin with the largest or most elaborate work by an important artist.
A small bowl can carry the same authorship, lineage and significance.
At approximately 9 cm in diameter, SJX033 is an intimate object.
It can be held, examined under light and appreciated at close range.
Yet behind that small scale is one of the most important names in contemporary Jian Zhan.
That is the attraction of this piece.
It is not simply a Wujin Blue Jian Zhan.
It is a certified Sun Jianxing.
