This Jian ware cup is a collectible work by Sun Li, a recognized inheritor and ceramic artist in the Jian ware tradition.

Sun Li comes from one of the most important Jian ware lineages in China. Her father, Sun Jianxing, is listed by China’s national intangible cultural heritage platform as a representative inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage project “Jian Kiln Jian Ware Firing Technique”. The same official source also notes that Sun Li is a Fujian provincial-level inheritor and a provincial arts and crafts master.

Jian ware is known for its deep black glaze, iron-rich firing character and naturally formed glaze patterns. Historically, Jian ware reached its height during the Song dynasty, and modern Jian ware has been revived through decades of research and firing practice. Fujian’s official cultural writing describes Jian ware as a representative product of Jian Kiln, with glaze types including black glaze, hare’s fur, oil spot, partridge-feather markings and other variations.
