A Wood-Fired Jian Ware Work by Chinese Arts & Crafts Grand Master Xu Yafeng

This Jin Xiu Fei Niao (锦绣飞鸟) Jianzhan is an individually registered work by Xu Yafeng (徐亚凤), one of China's nationally recognised Chinese Arts & Crafts Masters (中国工艺美术大师).

Presented in the traditional Bai Hua (百花) form, the piece belongs to the Gongyu Gongwan (供御贡碗) collection and is fired using the wood-firing (柴烧) process.

Its richly developed crystalline surface is created naturally in the kiln. Gold, bronze and dark metallic tones move across the bowl, forming patterns reminiscent of feathers and birds in flight — the inspiration behind the name Jin Xiu Fei Niao, “Splendid Flying Birds.”

No two firings produce exactly the same result.

The piece photographed is the exact piece you will receive.

About Xu Yafeng 徐亚凤

Born in Jingdezhen in 1940, Xu Yafeng comes from an exceptional lineage of Chinese ceramic artists.

Her grandfather, Xu Zhongnan (徐仲南), was one of the renowned Eight Friends of Zhushan (珠山八友). She also studied under the influence of her uncle Liu Yucen (刘雨岑), another member of the Eight Friends of Zhushan and a celebrated master of flower-and-bird porcelain painting.

In 1975, Xu Yafeng participated in the creation of the historically important “7501” porcelain, commissioned for Chairman Mao Zedong. She became closely associated with its celebrated Shuidian Taohua (水点桃花) decoration.

Xu Yafeng was later recognised as a Chinese Arts & Crafts Master, establishing an important position in contemporary Jingdezhen ceramic art in her own right.

She is also the wife of Zhang Songmao (张松茂), another Chinese Arts & Crafts Master, making them one of the notable master-artist couples in modern Jingdezhen ceramics.

Jin Xiu Fei Niao 锦绣飞鸟

The beauty of this work is not painted onto its surface.

Through wood firing, heat, flame, glaze and kiln atmosphere interact to create its crystalline markings naturally.

Viewed from different angles and under changing light, the surface reveals layers of metallic gold, bronze, silver-dark tones and fine feather-like formations.

These uncontrolled variations are part of the character of a genuine kiln-transformed work.

Each piece is unique.

Bai Hua Form

The Bai Hua (百花) form gives this work a more open and expansive presence than the Shu Kou piece in the same collection.

Its broader visual field allows the crystalline transformation to become the dominant feature of the bowl, particularly when viewed from above.

The relationship between form and glaze is important here: the quieter geometry of the vessel gives the highly active Jin Xiu Fei Niao surface room to unfold.

This individual work is classified as:

Gongyu Gongwan 供御贡碗
Bai Hua 百花盏
Wood-Fired 柴烧

Collector's Note

Xu Yafeng's significance is not derived simply from being the wife of Zhang Songmao.

Her own artistic lineage reaches back to the Eight Friends of Zhushan, her career intersects with the historically important 7501 porcelain, and she subsequently established her own standing as a Chinese Arts & Crafts Master.

This work therefore combines two qualities collectors look for:

an individually authenticated work by an established master, and the unrepeatable character of wood-fired Jian Ware.

For established master works, availability is often more important than discounting. Each authenticated piece exists individually, and acquiring another with the same form and kiln result cannot be assumed once the present work is sold.

One work. One identification number. One authentication record.
