A One-of-a-Kind Jingdezhen Porcelain Work by Chinese Arts & Crafts Grand Master Xu Yafeng
This individually registered porcelain tea cup is a work by Xu Yafeng (徐亚凤), a nationally recognised Chinese Arts & Crafts Master and an important figure in modern Jingdezhen ceramic art.
Named Loquat & Magpie (枇杷喜鹊), the work brings together two elements closely associated with Xu Yafeng's artistic language: delicate flower-and-bird painting and refined Jingdezhen porcelain.
A magpie rests quietly among branches of ripe golden loquats, painted with an unusually restrained palette. Rather than overwhelming the vessel with decoration, the composition leaves generous open space around the bird and fruit.
The result is elegant, intimate and distinctly Chinese.
The piece photographed is the exact piece you will receive.
More Than a Painted Tea Cup
The character of this work changes as the cup is turned.
The exterior combines the Loquat & Magpie painting with contrasting glazed surfaces, while the interior reveals a striking transition between warm brown and pale grey-white tones.
The gold-toned rim and raised foot complete the composition.
From one angle, it is a traditional Jingdezhen flower-and-bird work.
From another, it becomes unexpectedly contemporary.
This combination is particularly interesting in the work of Xu Yafeng: a ceramic artist whose roots lie deeply within the traditional Jingdezhen flower-and-bird lineage, presented here through a vessel intended to be held and experienced at close range.
About Xu Yafeng
Born in Jingdezhen in 1940, Xu Yafeng comes from one of the important artistic lineages of modern Jingdezhen porcelain.
Her grandfather, Xu Zhongnan (徐仲南), was one of the celebrated Eight Friends of Zhushan (珠山八友). Her uncle Liu Yucen (刘雨岑), also one of the Eight Friends of Zhushan, became an important influence on her flower-and-bird painting.
In 1975, Xu Yafeng participated in the creation of the historically significant “7501” porcelain commissioned for Chairman Mao Zedong, and is closely associated with its celebrated Shuidian Taohua (水点桃花) decoration.
She later established her own standing as a Chinese Arts & Crafts Master (中国工艺美术大师).
Her husband, Zhang Songmao (张松茂), is also a Chinese Arts & Crafts Master. Both hold independent and important positions within contemporary Jingdezhen ceramic art.

Collector's Note
For collectors of Xu Yafeng, this work has a different significance from her Jin Xiu Fei Niao Jianzhan.
The Jian Zhan works emphasise the unpredictability of glaze and kiln transformation.
Loquat & Magpie brings the collection back to Xu Yafeng's own artistic roots — Jingdezhen flower-and-bird porcelain.
Her artistic lineage, from Xu Zhongnan and Liu Yucen through her own involvement with the historic 7501 porcelain, makes flower-and-bird work particularly relevant when building a representative Xu Yafeng collection.
It is therefore not simply a beautiful tea cup.
It connects more directly with the artistic tradition for which Xu Yafeng is historically known.
