A Masterwork, Reinterpreted for Tea

This individually registered Jingdezhen porcelain tea cup by Zhang Songmao (张松茂) recreates imagery from one of the artist's landmark works, Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage (三顾茅庐).

In 2010, Zhang Songmao's monumental porcelain plaque painting of the same title was acquired by a Beijing collector for RMB 13 million.

According to the accompanying artist documentation, the acquisition marked the beginning of the RMB 10-million era for a single work of contemporary Jingdezhen art porcelain.

Here, that celebrated composition is reinterpreted on a Banzhi-form tea cup — a much more intimate format, made to be held, viewed and appreciated at close range.
