A DISTINCTIVE WORK BY A FUJIAN PROVINCIAL MASTER

Zhang Zaishou 章再守 is a Fujian Provincial Arts and Crafts Master known for his exploration of gemstone and mineral materials in contemporary Jian Zhan glaze.

This piece belongs to his 2019 discontinued Gemstone-Glaze series.

Unlike conventional Oil Drop or Hare’s Fur Jian Zhan, the focus here is colour transformation.

Under changing light, the glaze reveals different layers of:

violet, blue, bronze, gold and green.

The effect can change dramatically simply by turning the bowl in the hand.

The glaze is the centre of this work.

Selected mineral and gemstone materials were incorporated into the glaze formulation, allowing heat, reduction and kiln atmosphere to create its highly iridescent surface.

From one angle, the bowl appears dark and restrained.

Move it toward stronger light and the surface begins to open.

Purple becomes blue.

Bronze becomes gold.

Green and metallic highlights emerge between them.

The pattern stays.
The colour keeps changing.

This is the defining attraction of ZZS045.

YOHEN — A TERM TO USE WITH RESPECT

In Japanese tea-ceramic history, Yōhen Tenmoku 曜変天目 refers to an exceptionally rare group of Southern Song Jian bowls celebrated for their extraordinary iridescent halos.

ZZS045 is a contemporary work and should not be confused with those historic National Treasure bowls.

Its interest lies instead in a modern interpretation of that dramatic yohen-like colour transformation, achieved through Zhang Zaishou’s gemstone-glaze approach.

That distinction matters.

For collectors, accuracy is part of provenance.

2019 DISCONTINUED SERIES

The fact that this belongs to a discontinued 2019 series adds another layer to the work.

This particular gemstone-glaze direction is no longer treated as an ordinary current-production line.

For a collector, that means ZZS045 represents a specific stage in Zhang Zaishou’s glaze experimentation rather than simply another contemporary colour variation.

MADE TO BE TURNED IN THE HAND

Viewed from the side, the lower silhouette keeps the bowl restrained and balanced.

This is not a piece best understood from one photograph.

与传统油滴、兔毫不同，这只真正看的，是颜色随光线发生的曜变。

紫、蓝、金、铜、绿，在不同角度不断出现。

花纹是固定的，颜色却一直在变。

宝石、矿物参与釉料配制，再交由窑火完成最终效果，使这一只具有非常强烈的虹彩与金属光泽。
